Mr Rushmin Ndijeko narrating the story of how he got vaccinated by through the SLL Project to Ms. Kamogelo Maribe from Botswana Red Cross Society. A transformative story unfolded in the remote village of Makunda in Charleshill District. It is a story that exemplifies the Africa CDC and Mastercard Foundation's remarkable partnership with the Ministry of Health and impact through the Saving Lives and Livelihoods (SLL) initiative that is collaborating with the Botswana Red Cross Society and ACHAP for a door-to-door COVID -19 Vaccination. This initiative enables vaccines to directly reach communities, ensuring accessibility and breaking barriers.
Launched in June 2021 the SLL is transforming the continent and fostering future resilience in Botswana and other African countries through the $1,5billion initiative.Just like the rest of the world, Botswana was filled with anxiety and uncertainty during the time when the Delta variant's merciless grip affected many people. This influenced perceptions and actions of community members including Rushmin Ndijeko, a herdsman in Makunda village. for some time, he was hesitant to embrace the life-saving potential of COVID-19 vaccines because he believed they would cause more harm than good. His concerns were not unfounded, as rumours and misinformation were common in his community just like everywhere else.Recognizing the critical need for change, the Botswana Red Cross Society through its dedicated team of mobilizers set out to edify and empower the Makunda community.
They needed to empower communities with information, build trust, and foster a sense of collective resilience. Mr Elvis, a dedicated Red Cross Volunteer, and a beloved member of the Makunda village, stepped forward at that point. Armed with a wealth of knowledge about his community and a full understanding of their culture and language, recognized the critical role he could play by disseminating life changing information.Mr Elvis approached Rushmin with patience and unwavering dedication, knowing that as a Herdsman, Rushmin is influential and could set a powerful example in his community. He listened to Rushmin’ s concerns and why he was not vaccinated. Mr Elvis dismantled the myths and misconceptions that had taken root through heartfelt conversations, patiently explaining the science behind vaccines.Mr Elvis didn't just talk the talk; he walked the walk. He revealed his vaccination status, standing tall as a living testament to the vaccines' safety and efficacy. His unwavering faith in the power of vaccination became a ray of motivation and Rushmin got vaccinated. As Rushmin’s friends and neighbours witnessed this, they were also motivated to get vaccinated. This encouraged the volunteers to work nonstop to ensure no one was left behind. A total of 112 members from the community were vaccinated after being mobilized by Mr. Elvis. This also motivated parents and guardians to get their children vaccinated as 170 students received g their vaccines. This is a shining example of what can be accomplished when communities are empowered through transformative partnerships.
